"Many people don't focus enough on execution. If you make a commitment to get something done, you need to follow through on that commitment."
Kenneth Chenault (Chairman and CEO of American Express, 2001 to 2018)

Jenefer is pictured with Jasper, who served as her campaign dog for the 2017 and 2019 election. Jasper was a rescue, joining the family in 2012 at around 4 years of age. He was the life and soul of the party, and only settled down into old age a few months before he crossed the rainbow bridge in May 2020. We still miss him very much.

Jenefer Hughes serves as Chesterfield County's Commissioner of the Revenue. She was first elected in 2017, then re-elected in 2019 and is running for a third term in this year's general election. She leads a team of 38 talented staff, dedicated to providing the citizens of Chesterfield County with fair, effective and solution driven tax assessment services. During her tenure, the Commissioner’s Office has upgraded technology and procedures to create a better customer experience, including a partnership with Virginia DMV to provide DMV Select services in the Commissioner’s Office at minimal cost to County citizens. In 2022, she led the implementation of an online Citizen Portal, which allows citizens to take care of their tax obligations online.

Jenefer Hughes is a Chartered Accountant with thirty years of business experience in some of the largest corporations in the United States, including Ernst and Young, Hewlett Packard and McKesson. Immediately before her election as Commissioner of the Revenue, she was Director of Accounting at McKesson, where her team handled over $5 Billion worth of transactions annually. Under her leadership, the team streamlined and automated their processes, reducing their workload by one-third and improving the quality of service delivered to their business partners.

Jenefer was born in England, and lived and worked in Europe until 1997, when she moved to thSacramento, CA to become Western Region Finance Manager for a global US Corporation. She became a U.S. citizen on June 5, 2008. She moved from Boise, ID to Bon Air in 2009 with her family. She is Mom to two young adults and two much loved, elderly dogs.
